A Textile Trail in
Ahmedabad & Kutch
There is nothing quite like the insightful embrace of one of India's most respected and valued cultures - textiles. Breakaway takes you on a journey to meet textile craft communities in Gujarat
We begin at Ahmedabad at the Calico Museum that archives textiles from the Royal courts of the Mughals and gives an insight into the textile techniques from across India. Regional food soirees and a heritage walk in the old city of Ahmedabad adds a different dimension to our stay.
Meet the Salvi family engaged in keeping the tradition of Patan Patola, the famous “Double Ikat” alive. Interact with the Chitaras, a handful of artists that still make hand painted Kalamkari Mata ni Pachedis- an art form traditional to Gujarat.
As we surround ourselves with all things textiles, Breakaway offers a chance to get to know the craft community and their challenges. Move on to visit the Ajrakh and Bandhini artisans in Kutch, they will introduce dye and block printing.
Come indulge in a diverse cultural journey, complete with historical context, wrapped with local interactions and cuisine with Breakaway.
Interact with artisans and spend time looking at the secondary crafts that Kutch is home to-- wood, leather, pottery, and metal crafts.
Receive an introduction to traditional printing techniques, Bandhani and Ajrakh, by textile intellectuals and even get a chance to try your hand at them!
Watch extraordinary fabrics coming to life as the upholders of the double Ikat Patola tradition weave silk and cotton threads and then tie and dye them into works of art.
Interact with artisans engaged in the hand painting technique of Pachedi, a painstaking craft with only five families practicing it.
